Is your home ready for winter?

This time of year is perfect for cozying up with a good book or movie. Is your home ready? Check out our tips for getting your castle ready this winter!

1. Fix those drafts in your home, apartment or condo.

Seal the gaps around your window and doors to make your home feel warmer, helping to save you 10-15% on your energy bills. To help identify problem areas, light a candle and move it around each door and window in your home. Where it flickers, you have a draft. Fix It People can help to install temporary caulk, weather striping or storm windows/doors.

2. Prepare the exterior of the building.

Gutters filled with leaves and debris are a major source of roof leaks when the temperatures turn to freezing. Ensure they are clear. If you have an exterior faucet, be sure this is properly drained, isolated and covered. This will prevent nasty frozen pipes.

3. Purchase a door draft stopper, or put down a towel.

Place them along your doors leading outside to keep away cold air that can sneak underneath.

4. Obtain a water heater insulating blanket.

Insulating your hot water heater can save energy by reducing heat lost through the sides of the water heater by 25-45%. This will help you save money on your energy bills.

5. Insulate your outlets

It might sound silly, but electrical outlets, especially in older homes, don’t have proper insulation. These can be a source of drafty, cold air or a quick spot to let the heat out. Purchase foam padding to fit in this area, and be careful when working around electricity.
